Turning Away

Decking screws, sheet steel and painted pine. ArtPrize Top 25 finalist, 2016

TA-4.jpg

Turning Away is comprised of over 9,000 tinted steel decking screws, set hexagonally at varying depths into painted pine. Its decidedly industrial aesthetic is offset by a subdued mosaic of both warm and cool tones, providing a sort of radiance where the paint gives way to metal. The sculpture was inspired (with kind permission) by an original portrait from the Basia Art Vessel set by renowned photographer Errikos Andreou, and is mounted onto a scribed/polished plate steel and hardwood frame. The primary challenge was in depicting the 2-D subject's subtle degrees of form, tones and shadow with a nontraditional media that demands simplicity. Turning Away not only seeks to interpret the compositional grace of Andreou's work, but playfully defines its peculiar execution with a 'twist' on words.
